Launch date 12/21/12... The last day of the Mayan calendar. On that day the full alignment of the Earth with the Sun and the creamy center of the Milky Way's giant black hole - aptly named the 'Black Rift' completes. The Sun will enter the 'Age Of Aquarius'. All of it predicted centuries ago by those in the know.
Some think it's party like it's 1999 - apparently Mexico's tourist bureau sees the doomsday as a once in the life of a planet's marketing opportunity. According to some of Mexico's archeologists there is no need for panic, the last day of the 1,300 year old calendar is really just the beginning of a new one. Others aren't so sure.
"The Maya are viewed by many westerners as exotic folks that were supposed to have had some special, secret knowledge," said Maya scholar Sven Gronemeyer. "What happens is that our expectations and fears get projected on the Maya calendar."
Well, expect the worst, and smile when it doesn't happen my grannie used to say - or did she say when the worst happens, smile?
