The Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and the University of Chicago Crime Lab says four out of five criminals acquire their guns illegally.
The Chicago study documents gangs members who maintain a clean criminal record so they can legally purchase guns then pass the guns to the gang members. This process is called a “straw purchase” and is already illegal. But breaking the law is no issue for criminals.
Over 90% of gun crimes are committed with illegal firearms.
The takeaway? Gun laws do not prevent gun crimes they simply interfere with a law-abiding citizen's right to keep and bear arms.
