Retirement: Disease And Depression Your Reward

The London-based Institute of Economic Affairs surveyed 9,000 adults aged 50 to 70 from 11 European countries about their health before and after retirement.

The compiled results indicated 60% fell victim to at least one diagnosed illness. And depression struck 40% requiring medication in 60% of those affected.

Lead researcher Gabriel Sahlgren said retirement appears be a shattering life-changing event that's more stressful than continuing to work.

Think about it. At work you have friends and routine. At work you're rewarded with a paycheck. At work you have a niche, a role, a reason to get up each day. Retiring wipes all that out in the time it takes to turn your badge into the front desk.

Some now question mandatory retirement which forces people into the nightmare.

The key to retiring is not to just stop working - cold turkey. Unlike a death in the family, or a sudden loss of your job, retirement gives years of warning. The smart retirees will plan for the big change by ensuring there will be enough money to go home, and to have something else to do once you find yourself stuck there.
