Britain Says George Washington Was Greatest Foe

British historians have awarded George Washington the greatest foe Britain has ever faced accolade.

Of course, from the USA perspective, the British were the enemy, and Washington a hero and founding father.

Washington's military training ironically was as a 'Colonel' in the British Provincial Militia.  Washington served in three military organizations, the British Militia, the Continental Army, and the US Army.

Historians believe as few as 20% of the colonial population supported the war. Like the Civil War, families split along 'loyalist' and 'rebel' sentiments.

The most famous family to suffer the split was Benjamin Franklin and his illegitimate son William. William was the last colonial governor of New Jersey and staunchly loyal to the British Crown. Of course, Benjamin was crucial to the revolution and in forming the new nation after the war.. William moved to Britain in 1792 and later died in bitter retreat never again speaking to his dad.

It's nice to know the British still sting over their losses in 1781. Especially given how magnanimous the USA has been over the years saving Britannia's bacon from other malcontents in the cesspool we affectionately call - Europe.
